Roman votive statue Sirona

This votive statue is a replica of a 2nd-century AD piece found in Hocscheid. It is now part of the collection of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier. Small statues of Sirona were placed in house altars throughout the Roman empire.

In Celtic mythology, Sirona was the goddess of healing. Venerated mostly in eastern and central Gaul and along the Limes along the Donau, she was associated with healing springs. Her symbols were snakes and eggs.

Handmade from alabaster, this statue stands 25 cm tall. These small statues were possibly painted to give them a lifelike appearance.
