Product description
Umbos like these were mounted on the Roman scutum — sometimes made from brass, sometimes from bronze. Fully round umbones were also used. Umbos were built to deflect enemy blows while leaving room to grip the shield from behind. Beyond their practical function, they could also serve a decorative purpose.
This replica umbo is the perfect accessory for ambitious re-enactors building their own Roman shield. Use it as a replacement or spare part for a scutum, or bring it to any other DIY shield project. Made from brass and blackened on the reverse side, it features eight pre-drilled holes for secure attachment. The necessary mounting hardware — screws with domed brass caps — is included.
