This oil lamp is based on an original from the 1st century AD. It features a depiction of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra having intercourse with a crocodile. The crocodile symbolized the Nile river, and the intercourse presumably symbolizes unification. Cleopatra was queen of the Nile. The original was presumably made in Egypt.
Oil lamps were the main source of artificial light during the Roman Empire and beyond. Made in a wide variety of forms, lamps like this one were used throughout the period of the Roman Republic.
Olive oil was the original fuel, but you can also burn this lamp with modern lamp oil. Fully handmade using two different molds, each lamp is fired at 1200 °C. Measures 11 x 8 cm. Includes a wick.
