This disc head earring with hanging pearl pendant follows a 2nd century Roman model; a similar example is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This type of ornate jewelry was criticized at the time by writers such as Juvenalis and Seneca as a sign of excessive luxury.
