Product description
The cochlearium is a small Roman spoon with a tapering handle. The Latin word cochlearium means "snail shell," suggesting Romans used this spoon to extract delicacies such as snails and mussels from their shells.
These spoons turn up mainly in excavations of fourth and fifth century Roman hoards. Notable finds include the Thetford Hoard and the Hoxne Hoard. The Hoxne find in Suffolk is the largest late Roman silver and gold hoard ever discovered in England.
This cochlearium makes a great addition for collectors of late Roman replicas, reenactors, and museums.
