Product description
King Richard I of England, better known as Richard Lionheart, was the son of Henry II and reigned between 1189 and 1199. He joined King Philip II of France on a crusade to the Holy Land, where he fought against Saladin. Richard conquered Cyprus, then Acre, and attempted to retake Jerusalem from the Muslims. History remembers him as a crusader.
On his return to England, Richard was captured and held prisoner. In 1194 he was freed in exchange for an enormous ransom that nearly bankrupted England. Back home, he immediately launched a war against his former ally Philip II. Richard was killed during the siege of a French castle. His successor was King John.
This coin is a replica of originals minted during the reign of King Richard I of England. Made from leadless pewter.
The coin comes in a wallet-size card that includes historical background, details on what is depicted on the coin, and what goods it could buy.
