Product description
William 1st of England, William the Bastard, better known as William the Conqueror, was a Norman king. From a young age, enemy Norman rulers threatened him, coveting his inherited land and possessions. After many conflicts, he secured his hold on the former Viking kingdom of Normandy in 1060 and turned his attention to England. After Edward the Confessor's death, William claimed the English kingship. In 1066 he led a well-prepared expedition across the Channel and defeated Anglo-Saxon king Harold II of England.
In the years after Hastings, William consolidated his hold on England. He ordered wooden fortifications to be built — many later immortalized in stone — and commissioned the vast survey known as the Domesday Book. William was the founder of the medieval English royal house.
This coin is based on original pennies minted during his reign. Made from leadless pewter.
