This coin is a replica of originals minted during the reign of Scottish king Robert the Bruce.
In 1296, English king Edward I invaded Scotland in an attempt to conquer it permanently. A Scottish revolt against English rule soon followed, led by Sir William Wallace. After a years-long war of independence, one of the pretenders — Robert the Bruce — was crowned king. Bruce then fought on two fronts: against England and against several Scottish clans that backed rival pretenders, including John Baliol and John Comyn.
By 1314, the largest part of Scotland was under Bruce's control, thanks in large part to clans like MacDonald that rallied behind him. England made one final push to reclaim Scotland at the Battle of Bannockburn. Bruce defeated the English army so decisively that Edward II could no longer press his claim on the Scottish throne by military force.
A peace treaty ending the Scottish War of Independence was finally signed in 1327.
