The Anglo-Saxon king Harold Godwinson succeeded Edward the Confessor in January 1066. Shortly after his coronation, his brothers Tostig and Harald Haldrada of Norway launched a war aimed primarily at reconquering the former Danelaw.
Harold's army was defeated at the Battle of Fulford on September 20, 1066. The defeat was not decisive, however, and Harold went on to defeat the combined Norse Viking invasion force just days before a Norman army crossed the Channel. William the Conqueror had planned his expedition well. He moved into southern England, where Harold's army was already exhausted from the Battle of Stamford Bridge and a rapid march south. King Harold was killed at the Battle of Hastings in October 1066, marking the end of Anglo-Saxon rule over England.
The coin is made from leadless pewter and comes with an informative folder.
