A villa rustica is a rural variant of the urban Roman villa. Remains of villas like this have been found as far as Scotland and northern Germany, thanks to the Roman conquests. The villa rustica features a small inner garden (atrium) and two large column galleries.
Anyone who has visited an old Roman home knows the Romans had a passion for luxurious living. Their houses were larger than Celtic and Germanic constructions, and the interiors were often decorated with frescoes. The Roman Villa Rustica covers a surface area of 48 x 24 square meters. The two large complexes were connected by a garden, and the building is made from bricks. The owners bought wine and olive oil from Italy and grain and pewter from Britain. Some villa rustica owners were ex-soldiers who had built up a pension after their time of service.
