9th century spangenhelm, nasal type, 2 mm (battle-ready)

This spangenhelm is a type of nasal helmet. Helmets like this were used across Europe from the 9th century onwards. They remained in use at least until shortly after 1066, as they are depicted around this time on both Norman and Anglo-Saxon warriors in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Helmets of this type were used by Vikings as well as other Germanic people. Eventually, the well-known nasal helmet evolved from this type of spangenhelm.

Unlike later nasal helmets, spangenhelms were originally made from multiple pieces joined together with “spangen” (metal strips). This was a more economical production method introduced during the Late Roman period. The nasal guard protects the entire face while still providing an optimal field of vision. An additional advantage was that these spangenhelms could be repaired during campaigns. In medieval manuscripts, nasal helmets like this are consistently shown worn in combination with a chainmail coif.

This spangenhelm is based on fragments of historical originals. It is ideal for Viking or later Norman reenactment. This spangenhelm features a one-piece helmet bowl, making it significantly safer. The interior is fitted with a custom-adjustable textile liner and chin strap.
