New from Red Dragon — known for their high-quality HEMA plastic training swords — this line of high-quality historical sword replicas comes with a leather sheath and is made from high-quality steel with excellent hardness.
This sword is based on original Oakeshott Type XIV swords. Popular between 1270 and 1340, these swords appear frequently in period artworks and on effigial monuments, though relatively few examples have survived. According to Oakeshott's estimate, about 80% of English knight effigies from the period 1290–1330 feature Type XIV swords. Their popularity likely stems from the increasing armor protection they had to overcome. In the mid-13th century, battlefield armor saw many developments, and older sword designs began to lose effectiveness against these innovations. Swords with improved thrusting capabilities, like the Type XIV, became necessary. The crossguard features a leather flap decorated with a cross, which kept moisture and rain from getting between the sword and the scabbard during extended wear.
The sword has a wooden scabbard wrapped in brown leather with a brown leather grip. The edge is 1.25 mm thick. The blade is tempered and made from EN42J spring steel, with a core hardness of 45 HRC and an edge hardness of 50 HRC. The combination of these two hardness levels keeps the sword flexible and less brittle than comparable models. This sword blends excellent craftsmanship with years of HEMA experience.
