Product description

This type of great helm evolved from the nasal helm in the second half of the 12th century. It offered full-face protection, with eye and ventilation openings in the visor. Knights typically wore it with a chainmail hauberk and coif. Helmets like these remained in use through the first half of the 13th century.

Knights wore great helms and calottes like this one during the Crusades — including the Templars. This great helm features a leather rim. Some helmets of this type were painted entirely.
