Product description
This buckler is classified as a type IB according to Herbert Schmidt's typology. It features a round shape with sloping edges. The earliest depictions of this type appear in the early 14th-century Tower manuscript, though these shields were likely already in use well into the 13th century. Bucklers like this one remained in use until the 16th century.
Bucklers were ideal for hand-to-hand combat, making them a popular choice for armored knights and archers. A blackened finish protects this buckler against rust and weathering — a treatment also commonly applied to pieces of armor throughout the 15th century.
