This knight's helmet is based on an illustration from the Westminster Psalter (British Library, Royal MS 2 A XXII) dating from 1200–1250 AD. The illustration shows a knight kneeling in prayer before departing on a crusade, while his squire hands him his helmet.
This style of early great helm emerged in the first half of the 13th century. Developed from the nasal helm (calotte), it offered better protection for the entire head. Soldiers typically wore these helmets together with a chainmail coif. The European aristocracy and knightly class adopted helmets like these widely, and they appear in manuscripts and seals across the period. They stayed in use through the end of the 13th century.
