The medieval brooch depicts St. George on horseback, driving a lance into the dragon while a divine hand blesses him. The brooch measures 3.5 cm in diameter. A sturdy pin on the back works with heavy fabrics, making it ideal as a garment clasp for medieval clothing. The brooch also features an eyelet so you can wear it as an amulet around your neck.
Saint George grew up in the city of Lydda in Palestine, raised by his widowed mother in the late third century AD. He went on to become a Roman soldier. When Emperor Diocletian began persecuting Christians, George refused to comply and openly confessed his faith — earning him imprisonment, torture, and eventual beheading. In the Middle Ages, the Church named him a saint for the many miracles attributed to him, including the famous slaying of the dragon. According to legend, a town called Silene in Lybia was terrorized by a sea serpent that blocked the inhabitants' access to the lake. The townspeople practiced pagan rites and sacrificed virgins to the monster to keep it at bay. When the king's daughter was chosen as the next offering, Saint George charged the dragon on his white horse, drove his spear through it, and freed the princess — upon which the townspeople converted to the Christian faith.
