Product description
Leather jackets like this were worn from the early 16th to mid-17th century by people working outdoors — gamekeepers, seafarers, and soldiers. Jerkins replaced earlier arming doublets and served as an underlayer beneath plate armor. Like later arming doublets, this garment was also popular for civilian wear outside a military context. They gave the wearer a rugged, masculine appearance while offering solid protection against the elements.
From the 17th century, the buff coat evolved from this garment and became exclusively military. Historically, soldiers and civilians alike wore this type of leather jacket over a doublet — and in some cases the doublet and jacket were made as matching sets.
Made from soft suede, the Orthello jerkin closes at the front with four roller buckles. Use them to fine-tune the fit to your size. A back split keeps your movement unrestricted. Windproof and rugged, the Orthello works with a wide range of combinations — pair it with hoods and collars, or wear it under leather armor over a chainmail shirt. Build your whole costume around it. Perfect for a LARP gathering or medieval festival.
