This hood is based on originals from the late Middle Ages, as depicted in various illuminated manuscripts. It ends in a long tail, also known as a liripipe. Worn mainly by the lower classes of society, it served as a practical head covering — shielding the wearer from cold and harsh weather while working in the fields and similar settings. Wealthy people also wore hoods, typically more richly decorated and made in colors like blue and red. The bottom of the hood features late medieval motifs also found in architectural ornaments.
