The spear with so-called "wings" or "perforated" spearhead is often associated with the Normans, but its origins actually reach back to the Frankish Carolingian era. The Vikings adopted this spear and kept using it — as both a war spear and a hunting spear — well into the High Middle Ages. On the battlefield, the protruding lugs on either side of the spearhead stopped the spear from driving too deep during an attack, making it easier to pull free, and helped deflect enemy blows. Used for hunting as a "boar spear" — designed for wild boar and big game — those same side wings protected against over-penetration into the prey and gave the hunter extra control against a wounded, struggling animal. Made from hardened EN45 carbon steel, this large medieval spearhead measures approximately 61 cm (24 in.) in length, with cutting edges of about 45.5 cm. Its strong conical shape tapers from a broad base to a narrow tip, letting the bearer inflict deep, wide stab wounds as well as powerful slashing strikes. Two pre-drilled holes let you mount the spearhead securely to a wooden shaft of your choice to build your own winged spear or lance. Note that the shaft and additional mounting hardware are not included.
