The flamboyantly dressed German Landsknecht mercenary led a harsh, ruthless life. Famous for their huge, two-meter-long Flamberge sword, these soldiers used it to break through the enemy's line of pikemen — then drew the Katzbalger for the close-range fight that followed. The Katzbalger (roughly translated as "cat's belly") was highly stylized, built as an effective cutting and thrusting sword.
From the 14th century, Swiss pikemen dominated the mercenary world. Then Germany produced an equally courageous, sturdy rival. Landsknecht forces challenged Swiss superiority in a ruthless rivalry that lasted for years. The S-shaped guard and an extra-long, grooved pommel were hallmarks of the Katzbalger. This replica is just as combat-ready as the originals. The beautifully designed grip would make any Landsknecht proud. The grooves in the pommel flow seamlessly into the wooden handle, the guard is expertly spirally twisted, and finger rings finish each end. The hardened, high-carbon steel blade features three fullers to reduce weight.
