New from Red Dragon — known for their high-quality HEMA synthetic training swords — this line brings high-level historical replica swords to the market. Each sword includes a leather scabbard and is made from high-quality steel with excellent hardness.
The Kriegsmesser (War Knife) or Grosse Messer (Great Knife) from the late medieval period was a weapon soldiers relied on through the many wars that characterized this era. You can find several surviving examples in museums and armory collections. Styles range from straight, narrow blades to larger, curved swords with blades that can be quite wide near the point. Tip shapes vary from clipped points to long, narrow tapered blades with a heavy cross-section. The defining feature across all examples is the scale-style grip, typically fastened with rivets and fitted with a butt plate or cap as a pommel. Many examples include a nagel (side post or shell) at the center of the guard, while others feature side rings or additional hilt elements such as knuckle-bows.
This sword draws on original Kriegsmesser design. Under the Elmslie classification, it qualifies as a type 4b — a weapon type used primarily from the late 15th to early 16th century.
It features a wooden scabbard wrapped in brown leather and a brown wooden grip. The edge is razor-sharp, making it suitable for cutting tests. The blade is tempered and made from EN42J spring steel, with a core hardness of 45 HRC and an edge hardness of 50 HRC. These two distinct hardness levels keep the sword flexible and less brittle than comparable models. The result is a combination of excellent craftsmanship and years of HEMA experience.
