The justaucorps emerged in the second half of the 17th century and developed from the casaque, a spacious travelling cloak, into a more tightly cut jacket — hence the name, which means 'fitted to the body'. Early models from around 1670–1700 reached approximately to the knee and featured a relatively straight cut, wide cuffs, and a long row of buttons from neck to hem. Under the justaucorps, a shirt, long waistcoat, and knee breeches were worn. During the 18th century, the justaucorps became a fixed part of the male wardrobe and the model continued to evolve. Ultimately, this jacket formed an important predecessor to the frock coat and the modern three-piece suit.

This justaucorps is made of gray wool blend with a satin lining, and features a double row of buttons, a slightly flared cut, and wide cuffs.
