Product description
Shirasaya is a special sword composition mainly used in times of peace. The undyed Magnolia wood scabbard and grip protect the blade from acid and other damage. Many Shirasaya were fitted with a Sayagaki — an inscription providing information on the smith, origin, and classification.
In the 19th century, the Japanese emperor prohibited samurai swords from being worn in public. The wooden grip makes the sword resemble a staff, stick, or bokken, so it could still be carried in the streets of Japan.
This tanto features a Shinogi-Zukuri style blade with Hohlkehle (Bo-Hi). Made from 1045 carbon steel with a hardness of 52–55 HRC, the blade is razor sharp and finished with Hamon. Two bamboo stifts (Mekugi) fasten the grip to the tang (Bohrung). Swap out the grip easily whenever needed.
The tanto measures 49 cm overall, with a 30 cm blade and a 17 cm grip. It weighs 450 grams.
