This katana is a replica of a type produced around the end of the 19th century. One theory suggests the somewhat larger curve in the blade derives from the curve found in French cavalry sabers — but this cannot be confirmed. Officers of high rank, or those from traditional wealthy Japanese families, wore and used this style of katana at the World War II front. Simple soldiers typically carried factory mass-produced katanas, while a senior officer's blade could stay in the family for hundreds of years.
This highly detailed katana features a razor-sharp 1045 carbon steel blade, ground in the Shinogi-Zukuri style. The edge reaches a hardness of approx. 60 HRC; the back measures 52–55 HRC.
The grip is wrapped in shagreen and covered with rough woven cotton in the Hineri-Maki style. The brass tsuba is an exact replica of originals.
The katana ships with a wooden scabbard decorated with brass fittings that match the style of the tsuba. Overall length is 102.5 cm with a 72 cm blade; weight is 1,150 grams.
