In the early 18th century, the Shogun's chamberlain Kira Kozuke asked two princes — Asano Naganori and Kamei Korechika — to prepare a ceremonial reception for the emperor's ambassadors. Kira Kozuke expected generous gifts. Asano refused, leaving the master of ceremony poorly informed. Feeling dishonored, Asano attacked Kira with his knife. Kira survived with just a small wound. Asano then committed Seppuku (ritual suicide).
Among Asano's followers were 47 Samurai who became Ronin — masterless samurai — as a result. They knew this meant their death, so they devised a plan to kill the corrupt master of ceremony.
This event is a timeless example of loyalty and trust. John Lee crafted the 47 Ronin katana to honor these events, basing it on the originals used in Japan at the turn of the 18th century.
Handmade with a razor-sharp blade, this katana is built from 9260 carbon steel at 55 HRC hardness. The blade follows the Shobu-Zukuri style.
The grip is made from wood, wrapped in shagreen and rough woven cotton in the Hineri-Maki style. The wooden scabbard is finished in the Kuroro style and decorated with Kojiri (buffalo horn).
This katana measures 72 cm overall with a 32.5 cm blade and weighs 1300 grams.
