Product description
Helmets of this type were worn by Norman knights in Southern Italy during the 12th century. This helmet is modeled after various Italian frescoes.
Phrygian nasal helmets get their name from their shape, which resembles a Phrygian cap. The design was not a regional trend — it was used throughout Europe. Its distinctive shape may have been influenced by a thickening of the steel at the front, providing extra protection at the most vulnerable point where blows were most likely to strike.
This style remained popular through the end of the 12th century. By the 13th century, infantry wore it most. In medieval manuscripts, nasal helmets like this are consistently depicted with an aventail.
Made from 2 mm thick steel, with a 4 mm thick nasal piece, the two halves are welded together. An adjustable leather liner and chin strap keep it securely in place.
