This hand-forged iron troll cross is forged in one piece. It features a twisted design and makes a great accessory for Viking reenactment and LARP costumes — or for modern Vikings. The origin of the troll cross (Swedish: Trollkors) is highly controversial. With practically no archaeological evidence to go on, there is plenty of speculation about whether it is a genuine symbol from the Viking Age or the Middle Ages. The troll cross likely traces back to an ancient custom widespread across much of Scandinavia. People placed iron troll crosses over front doors, windows, and barn doors to protect their homes, livestock, and families from crafty trolls, evil magic, ghosts, disease, and all kinds of other dangers. Because of its shape, some associate the troll cross with the Odal rune Othala from the Elder Futhark alphabet, which stands for ownership and inheritance — but no verifiable sources support this hypothesis. No archaeological evidence confirms that people wore the troll cross as jewelry in the (early) Middle Ages, but for modern Vikings it remains an important symbol. In Germanic neo-pagan circles (including Ásatrú), the iron troll cross is a popular protective amulet today.
