This hand-forged iron troll cross is forged in one piece. It makes a wonderful accessory for Viking reenactment and LARP costumes, and for modern Vikings alike. The origin of the troll cross (Swedish: Trollkors) is highly controversial. There is practically no archaeological evidence for it, leaving many speculations and uncertainties about whether it is a true symbol from the Viking Age or the Middle Ages. The troll cross presumably goes back to an ancient custom widespread across large parts of Scandinavia. People placed iron troll crosses over front doors, windows, and barn doors to protect people, livestock, and homes from crafty trolls, evil magic, ghosts, disease, and all sorts of other dangers. Because of its shape, some associate the troll cross with the Odal rune Othala from the older Futhark alphabet, which stands for ownership and inheritance — though no verifiable sources support this hypothesis. No archaeological sources confirm that people wore the troll cross as jewelry in the (early) Middle Ages, but for modern Vikings it remains an important symbol. In Germanic neo-pagan circles (including Ásatrú), the iron troll cross is a popular protective amulet today.
