Product description
The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and Malta, or the Order of Hospitallers, began in 1080 as a hospital in Jerusalem. Its original goal was to help poor, sick, or wounded pilgrims. After Christians conquered Jerusalem in 1099, it became the first religious-military order responsible for the defense and care of the Holy Land. After the Muslim reconquest, the order moved its headquarters first to Rhodes and later to Malta.
Worn over the knight's hauberk, this surcoat identified the order the knight belonged to. It also shielded the knight from the dust, sand, and heat of the desert.
