Product description
The hoplite shield is inspired by the early bronze shields used by the hoplites, the heavy infantry of ancient Greece. These soldiers carried a large, round or oval shield known as an aspis, which protected them in the fierce battles of the hoplite formation. The hoplites formed the backbone of the Greek army, renowned for their discipline and strength. Hoplites also served in colonies such as Marseille and Epirus, where they defended the local population against enemy invasions. The Etruscans, who had a significant influence on the early Romans, also used hoplites and their characteristic shields. In battle, the hoplite shield was essential — its solid surface deflecting projectiles and blows from enemy weapons.
The shield is decorated with an image of Medusa, an iconic symbol from Greek mythology. Medusa was one of the three Gorgons, recognized by her snake hair and the power to turn anyone who looked at her to stone. Warriors placed her image on shields, gates, and weapons to offer protection and frighten off attackers. On this hoplite shield, the image of Medusa serves as both a protective amulet and a powerful symbol of the bearer's invincibility, shielding them from danger and destruction.
The interior is lined with fitted foam rubber for comfort. A sturdy grip is wrapped in brown leather, and a wide leather band accommodates the forearm to distribute the shield's weight evenly across the arm.
