The spear — the dory — was the primary weapon of the hoplites in ancient Greece and a symbol of martial identity. Hoplites used it in phalanx formations. Originally 2–3 meters long, spears grew to up to 6 meters after the 3rd century BC. In classical antiquity, the spear was more closely associated with nobility and heroes than the sword. Across Proto-Indo-European mythologies, war gods like Odin, Ares, Athena, and Mars were depicted carrying spears, and legendary weapons — Gungnir (Odin), the Gáe Bolg (Cú Chulainn), and Achilles' spear — played central roles in their stories. In Rome, the spear also carried legal and ritual significance, appearing in declarations of war and military honors. This set includes a spearhead and a butt cap. The butt cap let warriors fix the spear in the ground and double as a secondary thrusting weapon.
