The Langes Schwert literally means "long sword" in German. It was a versatile and iconic weapon of the medieval period, used primarily across Europe from the 12th to the 17th century. Also known as a hand-and-a-half sword or bastard sword, its specific grip allowed both one-handed and two-handed use. The blade was typically straight and double-edged, ranging from about 90 to 110 centimeters, with variations in both length and shape. Knights and soldiers alike carried the Langes Schwert into battle, making it a cornerstone of medieval warfare. Its long reach delivered powerful strikes, while its flexibility made it equally capable of precise thrusts and defensive maneuvers. Designed to cut through armor, it performed well in both foot and mounted combat. The sword's relatively wide blade and extended grip — supporting one- or two-handed use — made it well suited to a range of techniques, including the "sword thrust" and other classic medieval methods. The pommel at the base provided balance and control throughout combat.
This sword is based on original German longswords and features an S-shaped crossguard. It has a wooden scabbard wrapped in brown leather with a brown leather grip. The edge is 1.5 mm thick. The blade is tempered and made from EN42J spring steel. It has a core hardness of 45 HRC, and the edge hardness is 50 HRC. The two different hardness levels make the sword flexible and less brittle than comparable models. This sword combines excellent craftsmanship with years of HEMA experience.
