Product description
These gallnuts are dried and ready to use. Crush them to make ink. This technique dates back to well before our era and remained in use through the 17th century.
Place old screws or nails in a bowl with vinegar or another acidic liquid. Let it sit for 3–4 days until it stops bubbling as much. Pour the mix through a coffee filter to collect liquid iron sulfate. Cook 80 grams of gallnuts in 500 ml of water. Use gum arabic to bind the sulfate and the gallnut juice. Important: don't use too much iron sulfate — ink that is too acidic will eat through the parchment! The ink darkens after exposure to oxygen over time.
