Product description
The French military based this sword on the famous and effective Roman Gladius. Originally issued in 1816, the solid bronze grip had a pattern that resembled fish scales. Updated and reissued as the Model 1831, the grip was redesigned with a ribbed pattern. While it could serve as a combat weapon in an emergency, soldiers mainly used it as a machete to clear fields for guns. Its versatility as a tool earned it the nickname "coupe-chou" (which roughly translates to "cabbage cutter").
The Model 1831 stayed in service until about 1870, and the United States adapted the design to create the Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword. This faithful replica matches the originals, with a solid bronze grip and a bronze-studded scabbard. Includes a belt holder. Comes with a sharpened edge.
