Product description
This type of sallet originated in 1370–1390 in northern Italy. Soldiers across Europe wore sallets like this, and they became very popular for offering an optimal field of vision and hearing — unlike the fully closed sallet. They appear, for example, on the silver altarpiece of Pistoia.
From around 1419, this style of sallet spread to France, then to Germany and Austria by 1425, and reached England by 1431. Later in the 15th century, archers, crossbowmen, and infantry especially favored this type of sallet.
