Dragons were the mythical counterparts of snakes and appeared in the earliest myths of modern humans. As humans spread across the globe, dragon mythology spread with them. Among many Indo-European peoples, dragons play a prominent role in mythology. In Germanic and later Viking mythology, dragons appear as all-destroying monsters. At the same time, they symbolize the evil beast a hero must defeat. These two archetypes—the destroyer and the hero's adversary—reinforce each other.
