The thraex was a gladiator armed in the Thracian style, carrying a small square shield called the parmula and a short sword with a slightly curved blade called the sica. The sica was designed to cut the unprotected back of an opponent. He also wore a protector for his sword arm and shoulder, shin protectors, a broad belt, and a helm with a plume, a visor, and a high crest for protection. Paired with the hoplomachus, the thraex fought against the murmillos — gladiators armed as Roman legionaries — to highlight the clash between Roman soldiers and their non-Italic enemies.
This brass thraex helmet is made after an original found in Pompeii. It fits head circumferences up to 63 cm and weighs about 4.9 kg. The crest features a griffin, the companion of the revenge goddess Nemesis, while the helmet is decorated with a palm leaf symbolizing victory.
