Product description
This type of early pot helm first appeared in the first half of the 13th century. It evolved from the nasal helm (calotte) and offered better protection for the entire head. Soldiers typically wore this helmet paired with a chainmail coif. The European aristocracy and knightly class wore helmets like these, and they appear in various manuscripts and seals. They remained in use through the late 13th century.
This helmet is based on an original depicted on a fully armed crusader in the Westminster Psalter, dating to the mid-13th century. You can find another original on a statue at Olite Cathedral, also from the mid-13th century.
Similar helmets from the mid-13th to early 14th century appear in the Codex Manesse, the Maciejowski Bible, and the Cantigas.
The helmet is 1.6 mm thick and suitable for reenactment. The Gregory Crusader Helm is carefully designed and generously sized so you can wear a padded coif comfortably underneath. Fine brass fittings and decorative rivets complete the look.
