The chainmail coif dates back to at least the 11th century AD. Soldiers wore chainmail coifs either on their own or beneath a helmet. Many depictions, such as those in the Morgan Bible from 1250, show it fitting snugly around the head. Leather laces at the top improved the fit, while additional laces fastened the lower edge to the gambeson or hauberk to keep the coif securely in place. For added comfort, wear a textile cap or arming cap underneath.
Made from 1,6 mm thick mild steel rings with an inner diameter of 8 mm, this chain mail coif is woven in a four-in-one pattern from blackened rings. It covers the shoulders and features a triangular visor that protects the chin, mouth, and nose. The inside of the visor is lined with leather. Weighs about 3,3 kg.
