Charles V was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1516–1566. This empire was the largest in Europe after Charlemagne's empire in 800. He abdicated when he was forced to acknowledge religious freedom in Germany — a concession he could not make as a devout Catholic.
This sword is an Oakeshott type XIX.
