Product description
Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of the West around the year 800. He reigned over the Frankish empire and expanded its borders. His reign brought a golden age to the west, and he later became a role model for many feudal kings.
This is a replica of his sabre, now on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The sword originates from Persia — how it ended up in Europe remains unknown. Made for a king, it was possibly a gift from the Far East. It is clearly a cavalry sabre built for the Eurasian steppe. The blade is made from carbon steel with a hardness of HRC 50–53.
The fuller is inlaid with gold leaf, just like the original. The grip was originally covered with shagreen and decorated with gold leaf. To keep costs down, the gold leaf decoration has been replaced with brass. The scabbard is also richly decorated with brass. Well balanced, it measures 88.90 cm in total length with a 71 cm blade, and weighs 0.90 kg.
