The chainmail coif dates back to at least the 11th century AD. Wear it on its own or beneath a helmet. Many depictions, such as those in the Morgan Bible from 1250, show the coif fitting snugly around the head. Leather laces at the top help improve the fit, while additional laces can fasten the lower edge to the gambeson or hauberk to keep the coif securely in place. For added comfort, wear a textile cap or arming cap underneath.
Made from 1.6 mm thick butted round rings with an inner diameter of 9 mm, each ring interlocks with four others in a 4-1 pattern. The coif covers the head, neck, and shoulders.
