Gallo-Roman seahorse fibula, bronze

This fibula is a replica of a 1st-century Roman original excavated in South England. Today it is part of the collection of the British Museum in London.

The Romans used this fibula — presumably the Roman legionaries from Gaul. Its design is clearly rooted in the Celtic La Tène art style. Similar originals have been excavated in Gaul, where the Gauls wore them. The Romans later adopted this style as their own.

Cast in bronze, this fibula takes the shape of a stylized seahorse. Similar motifs appear frequently in Celtic earthenware and engravings from the Middle La Tène period.
It measures 5.5 x 5 cm.
