This beautiful pendant is based on an engraved Pictish stone from Knocknagael. Germanic and Celtic tribes loved wild boars. The tribes of the "eburones" and "eburovici" even carry the Germanic word for boar in their name. Ebur is Old High German for boar. Personal names like Ebbo, Eberhard, Ebroin, Eburgrim, Eburhelm, Eburroc, Eofor, Everhelm, and Everman all share the meaning of boar. The legendary Irish fighter Conan has been compared to a boar, and the Danish king Harald's strange nickname "fighting tooth" may refer to the tusks of a wild boar. Pigs were also a staple animal of the Celts — some Celtic legends say they came from the Other World. Prized as grave goods for the afterlife, they also appear as standard symbols and warrior emblems (see Gundestrup's cauldron) and as decoration on torcs ("neck rings").
