Product description
Cunobelin, king of the Trinovantes, minted this coin between 9 and 40 AD. The Trinovantes were a Celtic tribe that ruled over southern England. His tribe controlled a large share of British pewter production and export — already essential for making pewter and bronze during the Bronze Age. This made the Trinovantes very wealthy, and King Cunobelin maintained close ties with the Roman Empire. He sent his children to Rome for their education, and they returned with a wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas. Cunobelin was the father of Caratacus.
Caratacus grew up to become a prominent leader during the Celtic revolt against the Romans under Emperor Claudius.

Even so, this coin is deeply Celtic. The front features grain — a reference to the most basic foundation of food. The back shows a galloping horse, a fitting image for a people renowned as excellent riders. On the coin, Cunobelin calls himself Rex, king of Britain.
This coin is a replica of originals. Made from leadless pewter, sourced from the area where the Trinovantes' mines once stood.
