Product description
This shaft cap is based on originals used by hoplites in ancient Greece. The pointed shaft cap, the sauroter, was nicknamed the "salamander killer" because it could fix the spear into the ground during the phalanx formation. The sauroter also worked as a thrusting spear when the shaft broke, or when fighting in loose formation. It also served as a counterweight, keeping the spear better balanced. In a phalanx formation, warriors in the rear ranks could kill fallen enemies by holding their spears vertically and driving downward thrusts while walking over the enemy.
