Product description
This Viking buckle draws on motifs from two Viking art styles of the 9th–10th century. It fits belt straps up to 3 cm wide and measures 4.5 x 4.5 cm. The finish is bronze colored.
The decoration features a mask-like animal head en face with two large eyes at the center of the buckle and two gripping hands — the hallmark of the Borre style gripping-beast. The buckle also bridges into the Jellinge style that followed: a ribbon-animal motif spreads across the entire surface.
Historical examples combining both styles turn up in finds such as the Vårby hoard and the Gnëzdovo hoard.
