This monk habit is made after habits worn by the Benedictine Order during the Middle Ages. The monks were also called 'Black Monks' because of the color of their habit.

Saint Benedict of Nursia established his first monastery in the 6th century. By the 9th century, the Benedictine rule had become the standard form of monastic life in nearly the whole of Western Europe. Their scriptoria flourished from the Carolingian era onwards. The Order of St Benedict provides a middle ground between the practical aspects of monastic communal life and individual spiritual growth.

The habit comes with a chaperon and a waistband. Wearing the habit meant chastity and rejection of worldly possession.
