Product description
Grosse is German for great and messer is German for knife — and that's essentially what this sword is: a Great Knife. Unlike typical swords, this two-handed weapon is built like a knife, with a single-edged blade and a full tang with riveted scales for the grip. First appearing in the late 1440s, messer-hilted arms spread to other European nations under local or regional names. Examples have been discovered in the Netherlands, Northern France, Iceland, Sweden, and the Baltic Nations, in the central European nations of Poland, Czechia, Hungary, and Romania, and as far south as Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, and the northern Balkan nations.
Under the Elmslie classification, this messer qualifies as a Type 4b — a weapon type primarily used from the late 15th to early 16th century.
This is a devastating chopper, and the keen clip point can punch some serious holes. The fuller runs extra broad to lighten the blade. The hilt features a wide, straight guard that flares slightly at the ends. A nagel protrudes from the right side of the cross-guard perpendicular to the flat of the blade, protecting your hand. The ebony-stained wood scales are locked down with heavy-duty rivets.
Made from 1065 high carbon steel with a darkened, battle-hardened finish, the blade resists the rust spots and stains that come with regular practice and outdoor exposure. It carries a full tang and is tempered to a low 50s RC. This pre-sharpened blade has gone through rigorous testing, and the hands-on work of master smiths makes this line stand out. Includes a certificate of authenticity signed by every smith who handled your blade through each step of the forging process, plus a "Battlecry" sticker. Also includes a top-quality genuine leather scabbard with metal throat and chape.
