Anglo-Saxon disc fibula in Trewhiddle style, bronze

Product description

This openwork, cross-shaped disc fibula belongs to a group of early medieval fibulas from the 9th century in the so-called Trewhiddle style, known as the Elmsett type. The original is held in the British Museum.

Executed in bronze, with a diameter of 5 cm, identical to the original. On the reverse side, there is a sturdy needle construction, suitable for heavy woollen fabrics.

The original was made of silver and filled with niello decoration: two intersecting crosses form an eight-armed star motif, with foliate scrollwork and stylized, inward-facing animal motifs in the spaces between. A fine addition to your early medieval re-enactment outfit.
